Na vier maanden te hebben doorgebracht op Guadalcanal krijgt het First Regiment kans op herstel in Melbourne. Ze worden binnengehaald als de redders van Australië. Leckie wordt verliefd op Stella, een Australisch meisje van Griekse afkomst. Ze nodigt hem uit om in het huis van haar ouders te verblijven. Sergeant Basilone wordt onderscheiden met een Ere-medaille en hij keert kort daarna op verzoek terug naar de Verenigde Staten. Om daar het gezicht van de Amerikaanse werving voor soldaten te worden.
