En øldrikkende, cigarrygende, afdankede baseballspiller, Morris Buttermaker siger ja til at træne det håbløse San Fernando Valley juniorhold The Bears. Med baseballgudernes hjælp må han prøve at få banket de uduelige spillere sammen til et hold, men han bliver nødt til at hyre hjælp udefra, blandt andet en ekskærestes 12-årige datter, Amanda, og roden Kelly Leak.
