　　本片是典型的克里斯蒂式的推理侦探片。两年前的搭车人杰克掉在古生物学家阿瑟博士车中一个住址簿，阿瑟去还给杰克时，意外听说，杰克因谋杀他有钱的母亲，已被处以绞刑。阿瑟大吃一惊，因为案发时，杰克正在他的车上。两年来，阿瑟一直在外面，现在刚刚回来，无法证明杰克无罪。阿瑟深感内疚，可是他发现杰克的家人并不对杰克的冤死感兴趣，这引起他的注意。阿瑟调查了家庭中的每一个成员，最后知道了真相。
