　　本片曾获最佳摄影金像奖。故事讲述二十世纪初，比尔带着妹妹与女友从芝加哥到德州的麦场工作。不料患了绝症的麦场少主人爱上了其女友，比尔将计就计，遂劝女友嫁给少主人以便继承其遗产，不料他们竟产生真感情。后来少主人以为比尔重返麦场是为了带其妻私奔，于是在捕杀蝗虫时放火怒烧麦田，以宣泄心中的感情。该片以油画式的构图和色调，准确地捕捉了世纪初的美国田园风味，压轴的麦田大火一场尤其将摄影技术带到顶峰。然而全片调子较为沉郁，故事的发展亦略为平淡。
