Facing the objections of a stubborn mother, star-crossed lovers Hassan and Lai Lai struggle to come to terms with the difficulties of separation in a time of a new multicultural Malaya. Asun, a young man from the Dayak jungle tribe ventures out of the forest and gets lost. He is rescued by Malay villagers, and befriends one of their sons, Noor. Years go by, and the two of them remain friends. Noor, by now the head of his village, sets off on a long jungle trip with Asun. Unfortunately, they are attacked by Iban warriors, who capture Noor and take him to their village, where they intend to cut his head off during a sacrificial ritual.
