Nicole, nurse in Grenoble, is raped one night by four men. Deeply scarred, emotionally and physically, she thinks she will never recover from the trauma. Following a friend's advice, she decides to file a lawsuit.

The Leroy factory manager, Sorel, is a gambler with debts, playing double-game. He enjoys the advantages of his social situation and the confidence shown him by his boss, Leroy.

A burglar, Bob Duchemin, is charged with murder following a mysterious settling of accounts. Suspicion also falls on the manager of a cabaret on the Champs-Elysées, as well as the owner of the establishment, Enrico. But Bob is also found guilty and sentenced to twenty years' hard labor. Soon abandoned by his fiancée, Lili, Bob learns that she has become Enrico's mistress, one of the attractions at the Tipico. The young singer's affair quickly makes her an international star. For his part, Bob escapes and seeks revenge. He meets a young pure freak who dissuades him from carrying out his murder plans. Bob kills Enrico anyway, but in self-defense. Afterwards, having been found innocent, he will be able to "remake his life" with the pure young girl.

Following a visit to Mauliaire, Tom discovers that the woman he has met is not Laurance, but Lydie Audry, the industrialist's mistress. As for Laurence, her mutilated corpse is discovered at a level crossing. Was it a crime? Accident? Suicide? Inspector Muller is put in charge of the investigation, and his suspicions turn to the blackmailer. After many twists and turns, the real culprit is unmasked.
