Racerbilen Blixten McQueen är på väg till Kalifornien för att ställa upp i den stora tävlingen Piston-Cupen. Men längs Route 66 går något snett och han hamnar istället i Kylarköping - en stad där livet verkligen går på tomgång. Här möter han bland annat Porschen Sally, bilbärgaren Bärgarn samt den mystiska veteranbilen Doc Hudson. Ett udda gäng som hjälper Blixten McQueen inse att det faktiskt finns viktigare saker i livet än tävlingar, berömmelse och sponsorpengar.
