Ett före detta tennisproffs beslutar sig för att mörda sin rika och otrogna hustru. Genom utpressning får han en gammal collegekamrat att gå med på att begå mordet. Men allt går inte som han har tänkt sig.

Walter Neff säljer försäkringar och blir bekant med Phyllis Dietrichson när han ringer för att förnya hennes makes bilförsäkring. De blir förälskade och inleder ett förhållande. Tillsammans planerar de att mörda Mr Dietrichson för att få ut hans livförsäkring.
