Filmen utspelar sig på den bengaliska landsbygden på 1920-talet och kretsar kring Apu och hans familj. Fadern är poet och präst, som måste kämpa för familjens överlevnad. Han vill ge dottern Durga och den nyfödde sonen Apu ett bättre liv. Baserad på en bengalisk roman med samma namn.
