Baserad på John Irvings klassiska roman om T. S. Garp som växer upp med sin mycket egensinniga mamma. Filmen följer T. S. från unga år med drömmar om att bli författare såväl som T. S. som vuxen man.

Filmen handlar om high school-brottaren Louden Swain som blir förälskad i dagdrivaren Carla. Detta är Madonnas första roll i en större spelfilm, där hon spelar ledsångerskan i ett lokalt band som spelar bland annat Crazy For You and Gambler.
