The kingdom is ruled by the cruel King Anthracite, who is bored with everything in the world. One day he decides that only magical clogs will please him. The superhuman task of making such clogs falls to the cobbler Jakub. Fortunately, he also has the wit of his beloved Anežka and the magic of the permon Šišla to help him.

The young prince and the old king stand in the way of the treacherous queen's plans to gain the royal crown and fulfill her insatiable desire for power. The cunning queen manages to get rid of the prince and his stepson by sending him into the world to search for his dream Golden Maiden. With her helpers, she cunningly arranges everything so that the prince never returns and the old king does not survive. The path to the throne will then be clear. In the end, however, as in every good fairy tale, so too here, good will be rewarded and evil punished.

A small Moravian town near Brno in the 1920s. In a forest clearing, the mentally disabled Fricek discovers three dead young people: the nineteen-year-old daughter of the local forest ranger Růžena, the butcher's assistant Hrnčíř, and the former student Roubal. Thus begins a detective story that screenwriter Roman Ráž wrote based on a true story. Inspector Vrba is in charge of investigating the case.
