Upokojeni polkovnik Ludlow živi s svojimi tremi sinovi na farmi v Montani. Spomladi se domov vrne najmlajši sin Samuel, ki je končal študij. S seboj pripelje zaročenko Susannah, ki takoj osvoji srca Ludlowovih mož. Samuelova brata Tristan in Alfred se celo zagledata vanjo. S tem pa je moške idile v družini konec. Ko v Evropi izbruhne prva svetovna vojna se bratje kljub očetovemu nasprotovanju priključijo vojski. Vojna pa zahteva mnogo življenj, med temi tudi Samuelovo, ki umre na bojišču, v Tristanovem naročju. Tristana njegova smrt zelo prizadane. Ko se vrne domov se Tristan zbliža z Susannah in se z njo zaplete v strastno razmerje. Kljub temu, pa se Susannah kasneje poroči s Alfredom. Strastno potovanje v najtemnejše skrivnosti ljubezni, izdaje in nezlomljivih krvnih vezi. Film je prejel Oskarja 1994 za najboljšo kinematografijo. Dobiti ga je mogoče na videokaseti in DVD-ju. Glasbo za film je napisal James Horner.

Na začetku filma brata Burbank še vedno skupaj spita v svoji otroški postelji in gledalcu se zazdi, da se bo vsaka sprememba njunih okoliščin zagotovo zdela usodna. Phil je tako naravnost ogorčen, ko se George nenadoma poroči z ovdovelo Rose. Še posebej ga iritira prisotnost Roseinega občutljivega sina Petra. Phil namreč živi po mačističnih načelih, ki se jih je v mlajših letih naučil od svojega sedaj že pokojnega mentorja Bronca Henrya. Philova sovražnost in okrutnost do mame in sina se samo še stopnjujeta, ko vsi začnejo živeti pod isto streho. Stvari pa se začnejo obračati, ko Phil in mladi Peter skleneta nenavadno prijateljstvo, kar močno vznemirja Rose, ki zaradi tega vse globlje tone v alkoholizem.
