Zgodba postavljena v leto 10191 na puščavskem planetu Arrakis. Planet je vir začimb melange, najbolj dragocenega blaga v vesolju. Dve veliki hiši se borita za nadzor. Ko izdajstvo uniči eno od njih, mora sin vojvode izpolniti svojo usodo, da bi se spet prevzel nadzor nad planetom.

Zgodba govori o življenju zadnjega kitajskega cesarja Pu Jija, ki so ga kronali pri komaj treh letih. Leta 1950 je Pu Ji že pet let v zaporu, kamor ga je zaprla Rdeča armada med sovjetsko invazijo Mandžurije. Pu Ji se v zaporu spominja svojega odraščanja v razkošju Prepovedanega mesta. Imel je vse, kar si je zaželel, toda bil zaprt na dvoru in ni poznal zunanjega sveta. Ko je Kitajska postala republika, je Pu Ji prenehal biti cesar. Čeprav je poskušal reformirati Prepovedano mesto, so ga iz palače sčasoma izgnali. Tedaj se je predal dekadentnemu načinu življenja. Stopil je tudi na stran Japonske. Komunistični režim ga je rehabilitiral, ko je opustil simpatije do japonskega agresorja. Po revoluciji se je Pu Jijev svet dramatično porušil vase. Končal je kot navaden kmečki delavec v Ljudski republiki.
