V navidez idiličnem mestecu Rockwell v ameriški zvezni državi Maine leta 1957 živi devetletni Hogarth. Deček rad sanjari o invaziji vesoljcev in bojevanju s komunističnimi agenti. Nekega dne sliši krajevnega ribiča govoriti o nečem, kar presega vse, o čemer je kdaj sanjal: 15-metrski robot, ki je z neba padel v bližnje jezero. Hogarthova mama Annie seveda temu težko verjame, a ko deček zares najde padlega robota in ga potegne iz vode, mu njegov prijatelj Dean, lastnik odpada starega železa, ponudi skrivališče za kovinskega orjaka. Vladni agent Kent Mansley hitro izve, da so v bližini menda videli skrivnostnega zavojevalca iz vesolja in odloči se za vsako ceno uničiti nevarnega mehanskega velikana.
