Amalindis, the first-born of the two royal twins, is dutiful and agrees to marry Prince Tanka. Suddenly, three witches kidnap Amalindis, as the first-born can be a witch herself. The witches see this as a prerequisite for the eldest of them being able to rejuvenate herself in order to survive: she will slip into the body of Amalindis for the next solar eclipse! "Zottel" suspects that time is running out before this transformation. Reluctant to go with Tanka, who is determined to accompany her, she sets off on the dangerous journey to rescue her sister. She has no idea that she, of all people, will fall in love in the process. And she has no idea that it will soon be in question who is actually the first-born and therefore the one with powerful witchy abilities.

October 1941. Eighteen months into France’s occupation by German troops, young Communist members of the Resistance shoot dead an officer of the German Army. In retaliation, Hitler demands the deaths of 150 Frenchmen, as 'retribution'. The targets are to be mostly young men believed to share the assassins’ political convictions. Most of these men are taken from an internment camp for opponents of the occupation; a 35-year-old French rural administrator is ordered to select the victims. Although the parish priest appeals to their conscience and moral sensibilities, both the German military and their French helpers slavishly follow their orders.

Turkish immigrant Husseyin spends his days in hypnotic routine as a “guest worker” in ‘70s West Berlin, living in a small, shared apartment and commuting daily to his job at a factory pressing machine parts.
