Jeho prípadom si nikto nechce špiniť ruky. Nikto sa nechce zaoberať ešte donedávna mimoriadne úspešným advokátom Andrewom Beckettom. Andrew je totiž homosexuál infikovaný vírusom HIV. Nebolo to tak dávno, keď svoju chorobu pred všetkými tajil. Napriek tomu však dostal výpoveď. Predsudky, strach, odpor, diskriminácia. Pre to všetko sa oplatí žalovať podnik, ktorému Andrew před časom zarábal veľké peniaze. Na obzore zatiaľ žiadna pomoc až do momentu, keď sa objaví Joe Miller. Pre farbu pleti veľmi dobre pozná, čo sú to predsudky a diskriminácia a aj keď svoj vlastný strach musí dlho prekonávať, nakoniec uverí ideálom. V meste, kde bola vyhlásená americká ústava, jednoducho musí vládnuť rovnosť a právo...

Píše sa rok 1985. Elektrikár a príležitostný jazdec rodea Ron Woodroof sa od lekárov dozvedá, že má AIDS a že mu neostáva viac ako 30 dní života. Doktori si s dovtedy novou smrteľnou chorobou nevedia dať rady a tak Ronovi viac-menej dokážu poradiť jediné – pošlú ho domov zomrieť. Ale Ron sa nevzdáva, púšťa sa do bitky o svoj život s lekármi, farmaceutickými firmami, úradníkmi a hľadá cestu ako prežiť.

Erik, 13-ročný chlapec, sa práve presťahoval do nového domu v Minnesote spolu so svojou matkou Gail. So svojím výrazným južanským prízvukom a trochu odlišnými pouličnými maniermi sa cíti úplne mimo. Aspoň dovtedy, kým nestretne Dextera, o niečo mladšieho chlapca zo susedstva. A zdá sa, že práve táto dvojica by mohla byť tými, ktorí spolu zistia, čo znamená skutočné priateľstvo. Veľmi skoro však Erikova matka začne ich priateľstvu brániť. Dozvie sa, že kvôli neopatrnosti lekárov a ihle, ktorú použili, je teraz Dexter nakazený vírusom HIV. Má AIDS. Erika táto správa spočiatku vôbec netrápi, ale je mu jasné, že smrteľná infekcia stavia medzi oboch mladých mužov čoraz vyšší múr, ako aj predsudky ich okolia. Ale tam, kde sa dospelí vzdávajú, nakoniec preberá iniciatívu vynaliezavosť detí. V jednom časopise sa totiž mladíci dočítajú, že istý lekár v New Orleanse údajne našiel zázračný liek, ktorý by mohol Dextera raz a navždy zbaviť jeho prekliatia...
