V roku 2045 je svet veľmi nehostinné miesto. Stredoškolák Wade Watts, tak ako väčšina ľudstva, uniká pred bezútešnou realitou do virtuálnej utópie zvanej OASIS, kde môže byť každý, kým len chce. Existujú tu tisíce planét, na ktorých sa dá žiť, hrať, ale aj zamilovať. Tvorca OASIS-u James Halliday totiž zomrel bez potomkov a svoje rozprávkové bohatstvo spolu s OASIS-om sa rozhodol darovať človeku, ktorý rozlúšti hádanky a splní úlohy roztrúsené v jeho výtvore. Milióny ľudí sa celé roky márne pokúšajú rozpliesť hustú sieť odkazov na popkultúru z konca dvadsiateho storočia. Až kým Wade jedného dňa nenatrafí na kľúč k rozlúšteniu prvej hádanky a odrazu stojí proti tisíckam súperov v zúfalých pretekoch o uchmatnutie hlavnej ceny. Nejde tu však len o lákavú výhru, ale najmä o desivý dosah pretekov na skutočný svet, ktorý sa od základov zmení.
