Jej snom je napísať knihu. V miestnych novinách však dostane na starosť len stĺpček o upratovaní. O pomoc a radu v tématike požiada čiernu Aibileen, slúžku svojej najlepšej priateľky. Aibileen celý život slúžila svojim zamestnávateľom, vychovala sedemnásť detí, ale jej jediný syn zahynul pri nehode. Zlomená Aibileen čerpá útechu a silu od svojej najlepšej priateľky, tiež slúžky, energickej a prostorekej Minny. Keď do jej života vstúpi Skeeter, Aibileen si drží odstup. Za dlhé roky v službách bielych zažila spolu s Minny veľa, ale nikdy sa o tom neodvážila otvorene hovoriť. Skeeter si získa jej dôveru a zistí, že Aibileen je môže poskytnúť viac ako len rady o upratovaní.
