Píše sa rok 1982 a Taeko má 27 rokov, je slobodná a celý život žije v Tokiu. Rozhodne sa navštíviť svoju rodinu na vidieku, kde sa jej začnú vybavovať zabudnuté želania. V lyrických presahoch medzi prítomnosťou a minulosťou Taeko uvažuje o priebehu svojho života a zamýšľa sa nad tým, či bola verná snom svojho detského ja.

Na vidieku zvádza žena z mesta (tak je postava označená v úvodných titulkoch) jedného z domácich, ktorý je však ženatý a má malé dieťa. Ba čo viac, žena z mesta ho hucká, aby svoju ženu zabil a odišiel s ňou do mesta. V mužovi, hoci sa spočiatku tejto myšlienke vehementne bráni, sa predsa len usadí vôľa poslúchnuť radu zvodnej ženy. Pri plavbe loďkou sa však jeho manželke podarí utiecť a nasadne do električky smerujúcej do mesta, no muž ju dohoní. Spolu sa tak ocitnú vo veľkom meste a majú celý deň na to, aby si vyjasnili svoj vzťah.
Ma a Kui-jing vedú podobne osamelý a komplikovaný život. Ma je mlčanlivý farmár, posledný zo svojej rodiny, ktorý zostal slobodný; Kui-jing je postihnutá a neplodná, dávno prekročila vek, ktorý sa na čínskom vidieku považuje za vhodný na manželstvo. Zdá sa, že ich dohodnutý sobáš, ktorý má spojiť dvoch ľudí zvyknutých na izoláciu a poníženie, ich vháňa do vzťahu, ktorý obom zhorší život. Namiesto toho však využijú príležitosť povzniesť sa nad seba a objaviť svoj spoločný osud. Učia sa, ako sa stať blízkymi spoločníkmi, ako sa spolu rozprávať, ako sa o seba starať a dokonca aj ako sa usmievať. The show's title is a pun on the word "wildlife", which is the main theme of the show. The title refers to Darcy's eccentric life dealing with wildlife. Many episodes also had titles based on puns, such as "Puppy Love", "Swine Flew the Coop", "Knockin' on Heaven's Doggie Door" or "The Trouble with Truffles".

The story is engaging thanks to the impressive performances of popular actors, dramatic situations, and sensitive music. Red Wine is not so much inventive in terms of auteurship as it is a work of excellent craftsmanship. The resulting picture is a costume production neatly adapted to the character of Slovak rural life in the past.
