Rok 1984. Do pádu režimu v NDR zostáva necelých šesť rokov. Vládnuca Jednotná socialistická strana upevňuje svoju pozíciu pomocou nemilosrdného systému monitorovania a manipulácie s potenciálne nebezpečnými ľuďmi, k čomu využíva tajnú políciu Stasi. Verný stúpenec režimu, kapitán Gerd Wiesler, je ministrom kultúry poverený zhromažďovaním kompromitujúcich dôkazov proti známemu divadelnému dramatikovi Georgi Dreymanovi a jeho atraktívnej priateľke, herečke Christe-Marii Sieland. Dôvod je ale prozaický - minister sa do krásnej herečky zamiloval. Akonáhle sa však Wiesler do sveta dvoch divadelných hviezd ponorí, začne byť ich životmi fascinovaný a uvedomí si obmedzenosť svojej vlastnej existencie. Preto začína tejto dvojici pomáhať a kryje ich protištátnu činnosť. Weislerov šéf ale Christu napriek všetkému zatýka a donúti ju k spolupráci a donášaniu na jej partnera. Pád Berlínskeho múru sa ale blíži ...

Rok 1979. Rozdelené Nemecko v čase vrcholiacej studenej vojny. Dve východonemecké rodiny túžia po normálnom živote v slobodnej krajine a v utajení pripravujú veľký plán úteku na západ. Ich hlavnými zbraňami sú odvaha a vynaliezavosť, vďaka ktorým postavia teplovzdušný balón, s ktorým sa všetkých osem členov oboch rodín pokúsi preletieť do Západného Nemecka. Balón však tesne pred hranicou havaruje a východonemecká tajná polícia Stasi nájde stopy po ich nepodarenom pokuse o útek. Okamžite sa rozbehne vyšetrovanie a pátranie. Obe rodiny pod veľkým časovým tlakom zháňajú materiál a vyrábajú nový balón, ale každým dňom sa okruh policajného pátrania okolo nich zužuje, hrozí im odhalenie a zatknutie. Začína ďalší nebezpečný závod s časom a s políciou v pätách. Dostanú ešte šancu na druhý pokus?

When the mayor puts forward the proposal to have a company build a wind farm with dozen of wind turbines in order to secure the prosperity and future of the locals, the open fight for the only possible piece of land begins, which unfortunately belongs to three different owners. Everyone sees big money for themselves. Alliances are formed and friends become enemies. In addition, an unscrupulous vulture capitalism investor from southern Germany interferes that causes the glass to overflow.
