Dom Cobb este un hoț priceput, cel mai bun în domeniul periculoasei arte a extracției, adică al furtului de informații și secrete prețioase din subconștientul oamenilor în timp ce aceștia visează, când mintea lor este cel mai vulnerabilă. Rara abilitate a lui Cobb i-a conferit un statut de profesionist extrem de căutat, de o valoare inestimabilă în complicata lume a spionajului tehnologic, dar l-a făcut în același timp să piardă tot ceea ce era mai important pentru el și l-a transformat într-un fugar internațional. Acum i se oferă o șansă să recapete tot ceea ce a pierdut: o ultimă misiune i-ar putea reda viața de dinainte dacă reușește un lucru imposibil, opusul extracției de informații: implantarea lor în mintea cuiva. Însă un inamic periculos urmărește fiecare mișcare a lui Cobb și a echipei sale, în scopul de a-i împiedica să-și ducă la îndeplinire misiunea. Iar Cobb este singurul care ar fi putut anticipa acest lucru.

Există două lumi: prima, cea în care trăim zi de zi, și cea de-a doua, deloc cunoscută, paralelă cu cea reală. Una este vis. Cealaltă este Matricea. Neo încearcă din răsputeri să afle adevărul despre acea lume despre care a auzit vorbindu-se doar în șoaptă, lume misterioasă și plină de necunoscut. Dar ce este Matricea? Neo crede că Morpheus, o persoană pe care o cunoaşte doar din povești, un tip pe care nu-l prinzi niciodată, considerat în acelaşi timp cel mai periculos bărbat în viață, poate să-i dea acest răspuns. Dar adevărul pe care Neo îl află este mult peste așteptări. Iar viața lui nu va mai fi la fel.

O imigrantă chinezoaică îmbătrânită este implicată într-o aventură nebunească, în care ea singură poate salva ceea ce este important pentru ea conectându-se cu viețile pe care le-ar fi putut duce în alte universuri.

La sfârșitul anilor ’50, într-o școală de elită din Noua Anglie un profesor de literatură non-conformist își învață elevii să se abată de la litera cărții și să dea frâu liber pasiunilor. La început timorați și obișnuiți să respecte regulile rigide care le ordonează viața la școală și acasă, băieții sunt reticenți la cerințele acestui profesor excentric care îi împinge să rupă din manuale paginile cu comentarii stupide sau să se urce pe bănci ca să privească viața din alt unghi... Încetul cu încetul se lasă însă seduși de stilul și învățăturile lui (Trăiește clipa! Trăiește ziua! Trăiește o viață extraordinară!), prinzând curaj să se exprime liber și să își urmeze visurile. Una dintre pasiunile lor e desigur poezia și astfel descoperă că profesorul lor, care în adolescență învățase la aceeași școală, făcuse parte din Cercul poeților dispăruți, un cenaclu misterios format din elevi îndrăzneți.

Ultima parte a trilogiei Matricea îl găsește pe Neo inconștient, blocat într-o stație de metrou în zona dintre Matrice și lumea mașinilor.
