Acțiunea se petrece în America de Nord, în 1823, iar în centrul ei se află Hugh Glass, membru al unei expediții în Munții Stâncoși, unde este prins de un urs grizzly și sfârtecat. Căpitanul grupului lasă în urmă trei oameni pentru a-i ține companie în ultimele clipe de viață și pentru a-i săpa mormântul, dar, de frică să nu fie prinși de indieni, cei trei îi iau lui Glass armele și echipamentul și fug. In 1989, the German polar explorer Arved Fuchs and the South Tyrolean mountaineer Reinhold Messner set out together to reach the South Pole on skis without sled dogs or motor technology and then cross the entire Antarctic.
