Bulgaria, the night of October 18, 1922. A rampageous young man - an American, is forced to get off the Orient Express at a small station. The chief of the railway station and his daughter are quite unwilling to put up the stranger. Gradually, the American wins their trust. When the father understands that his daughter has decided to go away to Paris with the American, he makes a potion to sedate him and gets him on a train on the sly. In the morning all that has left from the guest is a piece of paper, which reads "Ernest Hemingway".

A small town in present-day Bulgaria. A mother and her two daughters are struggling to survive. The dreamy and distracted younger daughter often invents stories in order to make life more interesting. Unwittingly, she eventually gets caught in the trap of her own lies and destroys her older sister's well-ordered materialistic world. Meanwhile, the two sisters find out the truth about their mother

The story revolves around Steve (Ian Roberts) a zoologist who does research on poisonous snakes with the help of his long time friend Thabo (Peter Se-Puma) Steve and his wife Katrien are newly weds and very much in love but Steve's dangerous occupation casts a shadow over Katrien's happiness and causes tension between them. Sonja an aspiring artist and Katrien's best friend visits the couple and seeks inspiration for her work form the beautiful rural surroundings but she also becomes aware of undercurrents that strike fear into her heart and a series of strange murders only feeds her anxiety and an unexpected discovery that will seal her fate.
