FRAGMENT | The young, ambitious chemist Felix Saltau works at an explosives factory. Here he experiments with a new and particularly powerful explosive – an invention that will make him rich and, not least, worthy of marrying the boss’s daughter, Ilse. Unfortunately, the planned test fails, and Saltau is mocked by all the spectators there. Eager to regain his reputation, Saltau foolhardily tries again, but the charge explodes in his hands, blinding him. No longer able to work, he is fired. FRAGMENT | In the eyes of a jealous husband, a puppy is easily mistaken for an illegitimate child. Mr. Vibe wants nothing to do with the family’s new puppy and is thus unaware that Mrs. Vibe names the dog Ophelia. By a twist of fate, an orphaned child is left on the family’s doorstep. At the same time, Mr. Vibe discovers a letter with a plea to take care of little Ophelia. Jealousy consumes Mr. Vibe as he believes that this Ophelia must be his wife’s child born out of wedlock! War has been declared in the aptly named “Villa Pax”. The war-ladies, Mrs. Sørensen and Mrs. Hansen, spearhead the conflict between their floors, and constantly send their henpecked husbands to the front line. Mrs. Petersen watches over him like a hawk, and he only gets respite as he starts faking a toothache. Coincidentally, the shoemaker drops by and agrees to take Petersen’s place discreetly so that the appointment can be kept. The orphaned Eva flees from her harsh foster mother, who wants to marry her off to the suitor Berg. By pure chance, she ends up with the barber Kummersen, who has his own struggles to deal with: A Bolshevik apprentice with a large, dripping nose, an old intrusive housekeeper, and above all, a missing hundred kroner note for the rent. Nevertheless, he takes pity on Eva and accepts her as an apprentice, since the previous one had left in fury.
