A 6 de Junho de 1944, nas praias da Normandia, foi feita a maior e mais complexa operação militar de toda a história da guerra moderna. Empreendida por um esforço colectivo de vários países e forças militares, ficou conhecida como Dia D, e consistiu num enorme desembarque anfíbio de infantaria e blindados em praias fortemente minadas, patrulhadas e vigiadas pelo Exército Alemão, que ali instalara a sua Muralha do Atlântico. A ofensiva, que envolveu mais de 3 milhões de homens, foi uma das mais ousadas e sangrentas da Segunda Guerra Mundial, mas abriu caminho à derrota alemã e foi decisiva para o encurtar da guerra.
Norte da África, 1943. Patton (George C. Scott) assume o comando e injeta disciplina nos seus subordinados. Preocupado com a batalha contra o Marechal Rommel (Karl Michael Vogler), o famoso comandante alemão, Patton procura entendê-lo lendo o livro do próprio Rommel.
