Strategicznym celem jest wyspa Okinawa, której zdobycie może oznaczać ostateczną klęskę Japonii. Wśród setek tysięcy amerykańskich żołnierzy trafia tu Desmond T. Doss, sanitariusz, który ze względu na przekonania odmówił noszenia broni. Traktowany z nieufnością, oskarżany o tchórzostwo, wkrótce udowodni jak bardzo się wobec niego mylono.
