I 1947 ble en krigstrett verden fascinert av den unge, norske mannen Thor Heyerdahl. Han hadde utviklet en revolusjonerende teori om at Polynesia var blitt befolket fra Sør-Amerika, stikk i strid med det etablerte vitenskapsmiljøets teori om migrasjon fra Asia. For å bevise teorien sin gjorde han noe hittil uhørt: Han bestemte seg for selv å teste den i praksis - og la ut på en eventyrlig og farefull ekspedisjon over Stillehavet. Den primitive balsaflåten han skulle tilbakelegge nesten 8000 kilometer med, døpte han Kon-Tiki - etter solguden. Thor Heyerdahl fikk med seg fem unge menn: Ingen av dem kjente hverandre fra før, og bare en av dem kunne seile. Selv hadde han vannskrekk og kunne ikke svømme. Thor var villig til å ofre alt og alle for å få rett.
