Nacho er en mann uten talenter. Han vokste opp i et meksikansk kloster, er nå blitt en voksen mann og kokk i klosteret, men passer ikke inn. Nacho har et stort hjerte for de foreldreløse barna han gir mat, men maten er ikke god. Spør du ham, skyldes det i all hovedsak dårlige råvarer. Han innser at han må klekke ut en plan for å skaffe penger til bedre varer og dermed bedre mat til "de små foreldreløse som ikke har noen verdens ting" (og dersom Nacho samtidig kan imponere den vakre søster Encarnación, er det et stort pluss).

Filmen basert på den sanne historien om Boston Globes avsløringer av en massiv skandale i den katolske kirken, som hadde forsøkt å dekke over en rekke overgrep mot barn utført av prester. En av årets store Oscar-favoritter, blant annet med nominasjon for beste film. I 2001 begynte Boston Globe å etterforske en nyhetssak om at flere prester i den katolske kirken hadde foregrepet seg på barn.
