De lar seg etterhvert overtale, organiserer en ekspedisjon og blir sendt til månen i et rakettlignende romskip. De blir tatt til fange av forskerne de fiendtligsinnede innbyggerne, selenittene, som tar dem med til kongen sin. De klarer å flykte og vende tilbake til jorden. Filmen regnes som den første science fiction-filmen som er laget.
