Handlingen i Stanley Kubricks kultklassiker er lagt til "The Overlook Hotel", hvor forfatterspiren Jack Torrance blir ansatt som vaktmester for å passe på hotellet over vinteren. Han blir fortalt at det er vanlig at hotellet snør inne i løpet av vinteren, så han og familien må regne med å være totalt isolert i flere måneder. Dette er akkurat hva Jack tror han trenger for å finne inspirasjon og ro til å skrive en ny bok. Sammen med sin kone og sitt barn drar han opp til hotellet like før vinterstengingen for å inntre i jobben.
