Familien Addams skiller seg mildt sagt ut fra sine omgivelser. De lever i et stort spøkelsesaktig hus, de spiser rotter og larver til middag, de er mere opptatt av tortur og pinsler enn gjennomsnittsmennesket og de har en avkappet menneskehånd som "kjæledyr". I denne idyllen ankommer onkel Fester. Egentlig er han en forfalskning, den virkelige onkel Fester har forsvunnet i Bermudatriangelet. Den falske Fester er plantet av familiens advokat for å skaffe adgang til Addam-familiens navngjetne formue bestående av gamle gulldukater. Problemet for advokaten er at den falske onkel Foster faller for denne sære, men på sin måte sjarmerende familien. Og etter hvert føler "onkel Foster" seg som en ekte Addams...

En falsk greve klekker ut en intrikat plan for å tilrane seg formuen til en japansk adelsjente som er enearving til sin onkels palass. Han betaler en ung, kvinnelig lommetyv for å ta seg jobb som kammerpike i palasset og berede grunnen for hans inntreden i familien. De to unge jentene utvikler et uventet nært forhold og herfra går ingenting som planlagt.
