Light Yagami is een topstudent met geweldige vooruitzichten, en hij verveelt zich mateloos. Maar dat verandert allemaal wanneer hij de Death Note vindt, een notitieboekje dat is achtergelaten door een malafide Shinigami-doodsgod. Elke mens wiens naam in het notitieboekje staat, sterft, en Light heeft gezworen de kracht van de Death Note te gebruiken om de wereld van het kwaad te verlossen.
