Tijdens de Franse Revolutie stijgt Napoleon Bonaparte snel in de militaire gelederen. Als generaal grijpt hij in 1799 via een staatsgreep de macht en kroont zich tot leider. Hij besluit oorlog te voeren tegen Europese naties en breidt zijn rijk uit. Ondertussen tracht hij ook indruk te maken op zijn overspelige vrouw Joséphine, met wie hij een wispelturige relatie heeft.
