Het verhaal speelt zich af in het futuristische Chigago. Beatrice is een van de vele tieners die op haar 16e uit één van de 5 facties moet kiezen waarin de stad verdeeld is: oprechtheid, onverschrokkenheid, eruditie, vriendschap en zelfverloochening. Uit een test moet blijken welke het beste bij haar past. Beatrice maakt aan de hand van de test haar keuze en krijgt in haar gekozen factie te maken met een heftige inwijding, die het uiterste van haar vraagt.
Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) is een jonge vrouw die op vreselijke wijze gedwongen wordt om drugs te smokkelen. 'Star Trek into Darkness' volgt de bemanning van de Enterprise, als zij terug naar de Aarde worden geroepen. Daar ontdekken ze dat een niet te stoppen terreurbeweging binnen de Starfleet de vloot heeft vernietigd, samen met alles waar zij voor staat. De getalenteerde jongen Ender wordt naar een geavanceerde trainingsschool in de ruimte gestuurd, waar hij samen met andere kinderen wordt getraind voor een naderende aanval van een buitenaards ras.
De film volgt het 'leven' van een androïde die gekocht wordt om als huishoudrobot bepaalde taken uit te voeren. Al snel ontdekt de familie Martin dat ze geen gewone robot in huis hebben gehaald, aangezien Andrew steeds meer emoties begint te ervaren.
