Wanneer Dani op brute wijze wordt vermoord in het afgelegen landhuis dat zij en haar man Ted aan het renoveren zijn, vermoedt iedereen een patiënt van de plaatselijke instelling voor geestelijke gezondheidszorg, waar Ted arts is. Kort na de moord wordt de verdachte echter dood aangetroffen. Een jaar later brengt Dani's blinde tweelingzus Darcy, een zelfbenoemde helderziende en verzamelaar van vervloekte voorwerpen, een onverwacht bezoek aan Ted en zijn nieuwe vriendin, Yana. Ervan overtuigd dat er meer aan de hand was met de moord op haar zus dan mensen weten, heeft Darcy de gevaarlijkste voorwerpen uit haar vervloekte verzameling meegenomen om haar te helpen wraak te nemen.

Een medium voert in opdracht van de schrijver Charles Condomine een seance uit. Deze kampt met een writer's block die hij hoopt te verhelpen via spirituele weg. Tijdens de sessie wordt echter de geest van zijn overleden eerste vrouw Elvira opgeroepen. Er ontstaat een driehoeksverhouding waarin zijn huidige vrouw Ruth moet concurreren met zijn voormalige vrouw.

Wanneer zijn mooie verloofde Kate (Eva Longoria Parker) per toeval op hun huwelijksdag komt te overlijden is Henry (Paul Rudd) van slag. Zijn zuster Chloe (Lindsay Sloane) spoort hem aan een medium te raadplegen om met Kate's geest te kunnen praten. Henry valt al snel voor de knappe medium Ashley (Lake Bell). Henry is niet overtuigd van haar kwaliteiten maar de liefde is wederzijds. Er is echter een kaper op de kust: de geest van Kate waart nog steeds rond op aarde en het is nog maar de vraag of deze de pas opgebloeide liefde tussen de twee kan verdragen.
