In de nabije toekomst is het normale leven op aarde gedecimeerd. Paul en zijn twee zonen, Thomas en Joseph, hebben een halfwaardetijd geleefd: overdag rust en 's nachts kwelling. Elke nacht, nadat de zon ondergaat, worden ze geconfronteerd met de meedogenloze aanvallen van een mysterieus en gewelddadig kwaad. Op een dag, als Thomas niet voor zonsondergang naar huis terugkeert, moet Paul de veiligheid van hun versterkte boerderij verlaten om hem te zoeken. Er volgt een nachtmerrieachtige strijd die de familie dwingt een wanhopig plan uit te voeren om te overleven.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes speelt zich af in de toekomst, enkele generaties na het bewind van Caesar. Op hun tocht door de woestijn bereiken ze de Citadel, waar Immortan Joe de baas is. Terwijl de twee tirannen om de macht strijden, moet Furiosa vele beproevingen doorstaan en een manier vinden om terug te kunnen keren naar huis.

De film speelt zich af in een grimmig woestijnlandschap waar de mensheid is gebroken en waar bijna iedereen gek is en vecht voor de noodzakelijkheden van het leven. In deze wereld van vuur en bloed zijn twee rebellen op de vlucht die misschien wel de orde zouden kunnen herstellen.

Finch, een robotica-ingenieur, is één van de weinigen die een wereldwijde ramp heeft overleefd. Zijn kostbaarste bezit is zijn hond Goodyear, waarvoor hij door het vuur gaat. Nu de wereld is geruïneerd en levensmiddelen langzamerhand een zeldzaam goed zijn, weet hij dat hij niet lang meer zal leven. Om ervoor te zorgen dat Goodyear in goede handen belandt, bouwt hij een robot om over hem te waken.

Ondanks al zijn inspanningen om een oorlog te vermijden, is Caesar alsnog in een onvermijdelijke strijd geraakt met de mensen. Caesar moet tot het uiterste gaan, terwijl hij geplaagd wordt door herinneringen aan zijn voormalige vriend en verrader Koba.

Martin was een normale puber tot het moment waarop het land ineenstortte door economische en politieke rampen. Uit de as van dat slagveld rees een vampierenbewind dat door de verlaten dorpen en steden raasde. Martins familie werd afgeslacht en nu is hij aangewezen op Mister, een ruige vampierenjager, die hem naar een veilig gebied zal brengen. Hij leert hem te jagen en te overleven. Samen ontdekken ze dat de overgebleven bevolking net zo bloeddorstig kan zijn als de vampieren. Gewapend met een kofferbak vol staken en de wil om te leven banen ze zich een weg door de steden en rekruteren waar het kan, nieuwe vampierjagers.

De wereld die we kennen is niet meer. De steden van vroeger zijn veranderd in een grote woestenij. Door deze 'waste land' trekt de eenzame zwerver Max doelloos rond, altijd op zoek naar voedsel en benzine om te kunnen overleven.

Max (Gibson) wordt beroofd van al zijn bezittingen en kan nog net de stad Bartertown bereiken, die gerund wordt door Aunt Entity (Turner). Hij sluit een deal met Entity en vecht namens haar in de Thunderdome, een kooi waarin gevechten op leven en dood worden gehouden. Entity belazert hem en gooit hem de woestijn in. Met hulp van een groep kinderen die hij bij een oase vindt, gaat Max weer terug naar Bartertown, om met Entity af te rekenen.

De film gaat verder waar Evangelion 1.0 stopte: de paramilitaire organisatie NERV verdedigt de wereld tegen de terugkeer van de Angels, maar de voortdurende oorlog begint zijn tol te heffen. Shinji Ikari's relatief plezierige leventje krijgt een wending als een nieuwe groep Evangelion pilots, waarbij de roodharige Asuka Langley Shikinami, hem en Rei Ayanami komen bijstaan.

De apocalypse bewijst een geluk bij een ongeluk voor één gelukkige kluizenaar - totdat een tweede overlevende arriveert met de dreiging van gezelschap.

Two horns grow out of her head.
