One Life vertelt het inspirerende, waargebeurde verhaal van Sir Nicholas Winton, door wiens inspanningen aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog meer dan zeshonderd voornamelijk Joodse kinderen uit de handen van de Nazi’s werden gered. Jarenlang zette hij en een aantal vrienden zich in om de kinderen veilig naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk te brengen, waar zij veelal geadopteerd werden door Britse gezinnen. Vijftig jaar later, in 1988, verwijt Nicholas zichzelf echter dat hij niet genoeg heeft gedaan om alle kinderen te redden. Pas als het BBC-programma 'That's Life!’ hem uitnodigt om in hun programma te verschijnen, gebeurt er iets waardoor hij eindelijk in het reine begint te komen met het schuldgevoel en verdriet dat hij al vijf decennia met zich meedraagt.

In de lente van 1945 strandt een deportatietrein met honderden Joodse gevangen bij een klein Duits dorp dat bezet is door het Rode Leger. De Russische scherpschutter Vera, dorpeling Winnie en de Joods-Nederlandse Simone zijn tot elkaar veroordeeld in een situatie van diep wantrouwen, wanhoop en wraak. Er ontstaat echter een onverwachtse vriendschap tussen de drie vrouwen.

Caligula, gouverneur van Syrië, krijgt opdracht van de keizer om zijn standbeeld in de tempel in Jeruzalem te plaatsen. De gouverneur wordt een punt van conflict tussen de imperiale wil en de Joodse gemeenschap die zich daartegen verzet, en gebruikt kristalheldere logica om het bevel te weigeren of de uitvoering ervan uit te stellen.

Een heroïsch verhaal dat tot nu toe vrijwel verloren was gegaan in de geschiedenis. De film vertelt hoe fietsidool Gino Bartali uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog, arts Giovanni Borromeo en andere Italianen samenwerkten met joodse leiders en hoge functionarissen van de katholieke kerk, waarbij ze hun leven riskeerden door de nazi’s te trotseren om duizenden Italiaanse joden te redden.

Director Claude Lanzmann spent 11 years on this sprawling documentary about the Holocaust, conducting his own interviews and refusing to use a single frame of archival footage. The monumental film grew out of Lanzmann's concern that the genocide perpetrated only 40 years earlier was already being forgotten. In response, he relied entirely on accounts from witnesses, rather than historical footage or reenactments, sometimes resorting to hidden cameras or other deceptions to coax stories and memories from those with whom he spoke.
