Barry Allen ontdekt dat hij als superheld The Flash over zoveel snelheid beschikt dat hij kan reizen door de tijd. Hij gebruikt die gave om te proberen een rampzalige gebeurtenis uit zijn verleden - de dood van zijn moeder en de onterechte beschuldiging tegen zijn vader - te voorkomen. Maar op de terugweg naar het heden komt Barry vast te zitten in een ander universum.
Nu de X-Men succesvol het verleden veranderd hebben en een veilige toekomst voor de mutanten hebben bereikt, keert uit de duisternis de eerste mutant terug: Apocalypse. Deze mutant, ook wel En Sabah Nur genaamd, ziet de hedendaagse mutanten als zwak.

Tot verbazing van Superman smult het publiek van de werkwijze van The Elite, en hij begint zich af te vragen of zijn visie van 'Truth, Justice and the American Way' nog wel past in deze harde, cynische tijd.
