Engeland, 1685. Dokter Peter Blood wordt veroordeeld voor verraad na het behandelen van een gewonde rebel. Hij wordt als slaaf naar de Jamaicaanse havenstad Port Royal gestuurd, waar hij de aandacht trekt van Arabella Bishop, de knappe dochter van kolonel Bishop. Ze koopt hem voor amper 10 pond en schakelt hem later in als lijfarts van de gouverneur. Tijdens een aanval van het Spaanse leger op Port Royal ziet Peter zijn kans om samen met enkele lotgenoten te ontsnappen. Hij kan een schip veroveren en kiest voor een bestaan als piraat.
