The North Face

Stroke of Fire explores athletes' full and limited evolution within skiing and the pure joy that manifests from that process. The choice to enter this world is a spark, and with every new experience, the fire grows. With more knowledge comes more exploration, both physically and geographically, which helps to understand what those raw experiences connected with nature do for the soul.

Ueli Steck (Switzerland), Simone Moro (Italy) and Jon Griffith (GB) are not like 95% of the climbers on Everest: they don't use oxygen, altimeters (improperly called Sherpas), or fixed ropes. In 2013, the trio aims to repeat the arduous Western Spur. The Sherpas have the mission to equip the mountain with fixed ropes on this famous day, up to Camp 3: ropes without which customers of commercial expeditions could not climb Everest. An argument ensued, insults were hurled from both sides. The confrontation at Camp 2 degenerated: a Sherpa water bottle physically attacked the trio of Europeans. Blows and stones were thrown and threats led the trio to flee the mountain. The Réel Rock film crew, which is part of the climbing team, films this chaos without complacency.

From fear of losing sponsors to the challenge of maintaining their expedition-led lifestyles, “New Life” chronicles the journey of The North Face’s Caroline Ciavaldini and James Pearson and documents the shifting priorities that come with raising a son in a world that revolves around climbing and outdoor exploration.

A bush pilot drops the small crew of five on a remote, unexplored glacier to conquer the spine walls in a series of ascents, each one more committed. Narrator Jérôme Tanon describes with honesty and a touch of sarcasm what exactly is going on here. Above all, he wants to feel what it’s like to be in their shoes, to understand what so called “free riders” are made of, and what could be the purpose and beauty of “freeriding”.

In the spring of 2022, four athletes on The North Face team, Emily Harrington, Brette​ Harrington, Christina Lusti and Hilaree Nelson embarked on the trip of a lifetime. Their expedition to climb and ski epic first descents on Baffin Island, Canada became a celebration—of their​ accomplishments, of their friendship, and of their lives.​

Life is a fine line - Hilaree Nelson and Jim Morrison have often had to experience this at first hand. But the two ski mountaineers are dreaming again of a mountain, the 8516-metre-high Lhotse, and the downhill run of their lives. Never before have they succeeded in descending the eight-thousand-metre peak on skis, although the 45 to 50 degree steep Lhotse Couloir is an absolute dream line. But at some flanks of Lhotse there is seldom snow and also the weather has to play along. So the two US-Americans don't have much time left. They put everything on one card and dare to fulfill their dream with high speed and minimal equipment.
