Mokslininkai jau seniai seka artimajame kosmose praskriejančius asteroidus bei kometas, siekdami numatyti, kuris iš jų gali kelti grėsmę mūsų planetai. Nors dauguma didesniųjų objektų yra pastebėti, o jų trajektorijos apskaičiuotos, tikimybė, kad į Žemę trenksis iš kosmoso gelmių atskriejęs nekviestas svečias, išlieka. Tokiu atveju padariniai gali būti katastrofiniai. Naujausi asteroidų atvejai yra išsamiai ištirti ir aprašyti: 2013 m. netoli Rusijos Čeliabinsko miesto nukritusio maždaug 20-ies metrų skersmens asteroido sprogimo galia prilygo 440 tūkst. tonų trotilo; o žymiojo 1908-ųjų Tunguskos meteorito (kurio skersmuo galėjo siekti nuo 60 iki 190 metrų) sprogimas, pagal skaičiavimus, prilygo 15-ai milijonų tonų trotilo – t.y., buvo tūkstantį kartų galingesnis nei Hirosimos atominės bombos. Tačiau kas nutiktų, jei Žemė atsidurtų ne asteroido, o kometos kelyje?
