영국 최고의 폭탄 전문가였던 샘. 하지만 그는 2차 대전에서 독일군이 설치한 폭발물을 해체하다 심각한 부상을 입고 은퇴한다. 현재 그는 술과 진통제에 의지한 채 하루하루를 무기력하게 보내는 중이다. 그리고 알코올 중독을 이겨내기 위해 힘든 시간을 보내는 그에게 어느 날 군인들이 찾아와 도움을 청한다.
