1920년 독일로 떨어진 에드워드는 연금술을 사용할 수 없게 되어, 로켓등의 기계문맹에 관심을 가지된다. 그런데 이곳(현실세계)에서 전설에 등장하는 샴발라라고 불리는 에드의 세계로 가기 위한 음모가 꾸며진다. 여러가지 우여곡절끝에 결국 에드는 아보지 호엔 함임을 연성하고 알은 살아남은 호문크루스인 롸스와 그라토니를 연성하여 문을 열게되는데...

예수를 닮은 한 사내. 이름 모를 기이하고도 그로테스크한 곳에 떨어졌다. 그는 벌거벗은 채로 난쟁이를 따라 얽히고 설킨 ‘세상’에 조금씩 눈을 뜨게 되고, 복잡한 세상을 정신없이 헤매던 그는 기묘한 여정에 들어서게 된다. 우선 사내는 우연히 신비의 지도자를 만나게 된다. 지도자를 통해 ‘연금술’의 능력을 배우면서 인정을 받게 된 그는 세상에서 가장 부유하고 영향력 있는 7명의 인물을 만난다. 이 7명의 인물들은 태양계의 행성들을 각각 수호하고 있다. 이후 예수를 닮은 사내와 지도자, 7명의 수행원들은 속세의 물건을 모두 버리고 신의 일을 대신하고 있는 불사의 현자들을 찾아 성스러운 산으로 길을 나선다. 그들이 성스러운 산을 오르기까지 과연 어떤 놀랄만한 사건들이 그들을 엄습해 올 것인가. 성스러운 산에 올라 깨달음을 얻기까지의 과정은 절대 쉽지 않다.

잠재의식 속 가장 원시적인 공포에서 착안하게 이미지화된 고문당한 영혼들, 노쇠한 벙커 그리고 일그러진 괴물들이 있는 세계를 ‘어쌔신(The Assassin)’을 따라가보자. 이 영화 속 모든 세트, 생물체, 형상은 모두 전통적인 스톱 모션 기법을 활용해 수작업으로 제작한 이 애니메이션 걸작은 스톱 모션 애니메이션의 시대를 넘어선 예술에 대한 오마주일 것이다.

어느 날, 교도소가 폭파되는 사고가 발생하자 ‘에드’와 ‘알’ 형제는 그 곳으로 향하게 되고 거기서 ‘멜빈’이라는 탈옥수와 대치하게 된다. ‘멜빈’이 사용한 미지의 연금술로 인해 ‘에드’와 ‘알’은 그를 놓치게 되고, 신비로운 연금술의 비밀을 풀기 위해 이를 조사하던 중 ‘멜빈’에 대한 단서를 얻게 된다. 그러던 중 ‘멜빈’이 얼마 전 ‘아메스트리’라는 나라에 밀입국하려다 체포된 크레타인 ‘줄리아’와 관련이 있다는 사실을 알게 되자 그녀를 찾기 위해 ‘크레타’라는 나라와 국경을 접하고 있는 ‘테이블 시티’로 떠나게 되는데...

'거울가면'의 잔인한 연쇄살인에 떨고 있던 시민들은 그들의 마지막 희망이었던 '비독'의 죽음에 절망에 빠지게 되고 도시는 공포와 두려움으로 휩싸이게 된다. '비독'의 죽음을 아는 자들은 모두 '거울가면'의 표적이 되고. 젊은 저널리스트 '에띤느'는 평소 존경하던 '비독'의 전기를 집필하던 중 그의 죽음 소식을 듣고 충격에 빠진다. 비독의 비밀스런 죽음에 의문을 품고 있던 그는 죽음을 무릅쓰고 조사에 나선다. 조사를 시작한 후 혼란에 빠진 사회의 어두운 면들을 발견하고 한 도시의 이면에선 극악무도한 사건이 벌어지고 있었다는 것을 알고 경악한다. 사건의 실마리는 좀 체 잡히지 않고 조사 작업은 제자리 만을 맴돈채 미궁 속으로 빠져들고 사건과 관련이 있는 자들은 모두 '거울가면'에 의해 비참한 최후를 맞이하게 되는데.
