廃線が決まった北海道のローカル線・幌舞線の終着駅である幌舞。駅と運命をともにするかのように定年を迎えつつある駅長の乙松は、どんな時にも仕事を休んだことのない筋金入りの鉄道員（ぽっぽや）だった。十数年前、生まれたばかりの娘が亡くなった日も、約2年前に妻が病に倒れた日も、休むことなく駅に立ち続けた。周囲は彼の定年後をあれこれと心配するが、そんなある日、彼は偶然から見慣れぬ少女と親しくなる。
