旅に出た、士官学校教授の青地豊二郎と友人の中砂糺。その途中、彼らは弟の葬式に出席してきたという芸者の小稲と出会う。それから1年、中砂から結婚の報を受けた青地は、彼の家を訪ねることに。だが、妻だという園が小稲とうり二つであることに驚かされる。やがて、園は生まれたばかりの娘を残して逝去。中砂の様子を見に行く青地だが、今度は小稲が乳母として娘を抱いていることに驚く。
