In Irlanda, il giovane Gerry Conlon, coinvolto in una guerriglia urbana con gli inglesi e con l'IRA, ripara in Inghilterra con l'amico Paul Hill che, arrestato per un attentato che distrugge un pub e sottoposto a violente pressioni, suo malgrado lo denuncia. Gerry, maltrattato per sette giorni dalla polizia, che minaccia di uccidergli il padre Giuseppe, firma una falsa dichiarazione coinvolgendo due hippy della comune dove si era rifugiato con Hill: Paddy Armstrong e Carole Richardson. La polizia arresta poi la zia Annie ed il padre per favoreggiamento. Dopo un processo iniquo, orchestrato dall'ispettore Robert Dixon, che ha coordinato arresti e interrogatori preliminari, tutti vengono condannati. Dopo 15 anni Gerry e il padre, che dividono la cella, scoprono il vero attentatore, Joseph McAndrew. La polizia non ha voluto riaprire il processo, e Giuseppe, tramite l'avvocatessa Gareth Peirce, cerca di dimostrare la verità.

Poiché la loro ultima missione non è andata a buon fine, Ray e Ken, due killer a pagamento, vengono allontanati da Londra dal loro capo, Harry, in modo da far calmare le acque. I due trovano riparo a Bruges, in Belgio, dove si recano per un paio di settimane a fare i turisti. Durante il loro soggiorno nella cittadina, Ray e Ken incontrano una serie di bizzarri personaggi e per il problematico Ray, il destino ha in serbo anche un incontro d'amore. La giornata verrà ricordata come la 'Domenica di Sangue' e segnerà l'inizio della guerra civile. Il film descrive in dettaglio gli eventi di quel giorno festivo seguendo quattro personaggi. Ivan Cooper, un cattolico che lotta per i diritti civili; Gerry Donaghy, un cattolico che ama una protestante; il generale MacLellan che guida le truppe britanniche e un soldato che si trova nell'occhio del ciclone. Scopriamo così che Saoirse è una delle "selkies", creature magiche che vivono a metà tra terra e mare e che con il proprio canto possono risvegliare le vittime della strega Macha, private di emozioni e trasformate in pietra. Saoirse è la prescelta e con questo suo compito inizia un immaginifico cammino in cui Ben metterà in gioco la propria vita per salvare quella della sorellina.

Alla fine la bella Kathy e il giovane Michael si innamorano.
