Il burbero Harry Hogge, valente nel progettare automobili da corsa ma al momento in forzata inattività, viene convinto da Tim Daland, un importante concessionario del settore auto, a costruirne una adatta alla spericolata audacia del giovane Cole Trickle. Dopo le prime prove, hanno successivamente inizio le corse durante le quali sia Cole sia il suo più temibile ed irriducibile avversario, Rowdy Burnes, si sfidano in maniera avventata. Successivamente, in una gara importante, avviene un incidente grave: sia Cole sia Rowdy, entrambi in coma, vengono trasportati all'ospedale dove, curati dalla giovane dottoressa Claire Lewicki, riescono a sopravvivere. Maggie si ritrova a dover badare al maggiolino tutto matto, divisa fra la passione per le corse e le promesse fatte a suo padre.
