Henriknek csaknem eszét veszi a szerelem, vagy a férfiúi kivagyiság, és mindent megmozgat, hogy elváljon a feleségétől, akit egyébként nem kevésbé botrányos körülmények között vett el annak idején.

A nagy vonatrablás megtörtént esemény: 1855-ben, a krími háború idején az úri rabló, Edward Pierce és társai kifosztották a London-Párizs expresszvonat postakocsiját, amelyben a katonák zsoldját szállították.

1797-ben járunk. William Wilberforce, a rabszolgaság eltörlésének brit élharcosa üdülni megy, hogy szívbetegségét kúrálja. Itt megismerkedik az elragadó Barbara Spoonerrel, akiben lelki társra és szerelmére talál, és akinek elkezdi mesélni élettörténetét. Wilberforce mellett áll a rabszolgahajó-kapitányból lett pap, egyben az "Amazing Grace" című híres himnusz szerzője, valamint egy rabszolgából lett író. Ebben, a romantikus elemeket sem nélkülöző filmben bepillantást nyerhetünk a XX. század egyik legnagyobb brit politikusa, Winston Churchill házasságába. A nagyformátumú politikus életének egy kiváltképp zűrös, noha kevésbé ismert időszakát láthatjuk a képernyőn.
