Sredina je 80-ih prošlog stoljeća. Opasnost od nuklearnog rata između Amerike i Rusije neprestano prijeti čovječanstvu, a superheroji su morali ostaviti svoje kostime i posao zahvaljujući Keeneovom nacionalnom zakonu, koji je američki kongres prije desetak godina donio, a kojim se zabranjuje bilo kakvo osvetničko ponašanje suprotno zakonu. No sve se mijenja kada se Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), bivši superheroj i medijska zvijezda, nakon borbe s misterioznim protivnikom, sunovrati kroz prozor nebodera. Njegova smrt ne prođe neopaženo pa jedan od posljednjih osvetnika Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) krene u istragu i upozori umirovljene bivše kolege - Dr. Manhattana (Billy Crudruo), Nighta Owla (Patrick Wilson), Ozymandiasa (Matthew Goode), Sally Jupiter (Carla Gugino) i njenu kći Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) da su im životi u opasnosti te da se nešto ozbiljno sprema.
