Ova nevjerojatna istinita priča američka je adaptacija japanske priče o lojalnom psu imena Hachiko. Na povratku kući sveučilišni profesor Parker Wilson na željezničkoj postaji ugleda napušteno štene pasmine Akita. Dok se ni njegovoj supruzi Cate ni kćeri Andy pretjerano ne sviđa ideja u psu u kući, Parkeru se umiljato štene izuzetno sviđa. A kad počne intenzivno skrbiti o novom ljubimcu kojem na savjet kolege Kena dade ime Hachi, Parker će s njim početi razvijati neobičnu i vrlo čvrstu vezu. Nakon što se poslije nekoliko tjedana uvjeri u čvrstinu prijateljstva svog supruga i Hachija, Cate naposljetku dopusti da Hachi trajno ostane u njihovoj obitelji. Hachi će se s vremenom toliko vezati uz Parkera da će ga svakodnevno pri odlasku na posao početi pratiti na željezničku postaju, te ga ondje i dočekivati na povratku. A onda se jednog dana zbog kobnog srčanog udara Parker neće vratiti s posla.

Kada jednoga dana opasna epidemija difterije pogodi djecu malenoga gradića Nomea na Aljasci, Balto će pokazati svoju dobrotu. Zbog strašne snježne mećave zatvoreni su svi prilazi gradu pa je i tako zadnja mogućnost nabave lijekova nemoguća. Jedini spas je čopor hrabrih pasa, koji će kroz arktičku oluju otići po lijek. Ali u zaleđenoj divljini životinje zalutaju. Sada jedino Balto može izbaviti pse iz njihove nevolje i tako spasiti djecu od sigurne smrti.
